My Story…
3 years ago I was looking for a way to escape my career and become a full time business owner as a personal coach. I didn’t know much about being an entrepreneur but I knew I needed a platform where I could share my knowledge and attract potential customers. Because I didn’t know what else to do, I went to the first designer I found and got a website developed. It cost me over $1000 and it was built using a site builder template.
After a month, I realized that no one was visiting my site. How did I know? Absolutely no one had attempted to contact me. They were probably not intrigued by the “mission statement” on my home page. Besides… the little counter at the bottom of my home page only seemed to increase when I loaded my site. I knew something had to change.
Because I had a background in software and computer science, my business partner and I were able to teach ourselves HTML and redesigned the entire site from scratch. Even with my technical background, I spent many nights cursing at the computer screen as the website failed to load, had broken links or simply didn’t work as expected.
While this was all happening, I took a huge risk and left my full time corporate career to dedicate my life to building my business. Despite the blank stares and looks of disappointment on the faces of many friends and family, I continued to move forward.
I poured thousands more dollars into design and marketing courses, seminars as well as advertising opportunities that brought me a total of ZERO new business. Not to mention the massive number of hours we were spending working on the website. The small amount of money I was making in business came from cold calling or hustling my services at trade shows, seminars and colleges.
My lack of results was really starting to hammer at my confidence. The people around me who had doubted my decision to become a full time business owner were starting to look like they were right. I was becoming frustrated and began to worry whether I was going to be able to pull it off.
It was then that I learned a funny thing about success. For the 12-18 months we were struggling to make a nice site, 90% of the ideas we tried did not work. But 10% DID work and since we were testing so many ideas for such a long time, that the 10% ideas started adding up.
The most significant discovery in that 10% category was changing my entire architecture off of HTML and over to WordPress based on some sound advice from fellow Warrior Brad Gosse! With some quick coaching on how to use WordPress, website maintenance went from frustrating and tedious to quick and painless. Since then we have never looked back.
Then. It happened…
With the flexibility of WordPress combined with all of our battle tested Internet Marketing experience, we started seeing some awesome results…
We were ranking very high on search engines. Traffic numbers steadily increased. People started opting in to our list. People were downloading my articles. Prospects were inquiring about my coaching and speaking… Basically, we were finally gaining some traction.
Things got really interesting when other local business owners started asking for website and online marketing advice. This turned into our first website deal. That deal lead to a handful of additional deals, an opportunity to teach Internet Marketing at a local college, as well as a couple of profitable partnerships built on small business directories and Internet Marketing seminars.
The coolest part of all was that I was now able to provide way more value to my coaching clients since most of them were new business owners and had no idea what to do online. WordPress provided the flexibility to design high impact, content driven sites while making it easy on the business owner to update and manage the site themselves.
There was a problem though. In order to make the site design service profitable, we were charging between $1500 and $5000 for a new, custom designed WordPress site with training on how to self manage it. Unfortunately, this priced many potential customers out of our market.
That’s when it occurred to me. Most of the conversations I was having with new clients were the same. If I could extract all of the most important information into usable educational modules, anyone could start with WordPress and follow the steps to achieve their personal business goals.
